Reading/Sending Mail: The Different System Players
The Mail Server:
- The mail server is responsible for “unwrapping” the delivered “electronic envelop” and depositing the Email message it contains into the recipient’s mailbox.
- If delivery is not possible (e.g. user account has expired, or user does not exist, or user mailbox has exceeded a preset maximum size) then the mail server sends an “Undeliverable Mail” message to the sender.
- Also, the Mail Server may provide for other services (e.g. aliasing, Return-Receipt, logging, etc.)
