Reading/Sending Mail: The Different System Players
The SMTP server:
- The SMTP server is responsible for “enclosing” the user’s email message into an “electronic envelop” and dropping it off to the Internet data delivery service.
- In addition to the above, the SMTP may perform other functions (e.g. logging, adding header information, etc.)
