Her parents, Peeter Toom and Marie Carlsohn, were musicians; they played at weddings and other events. They had five children, at least two of whom, namely Peeter Toom and Olga Toom, became musicians. Lidia had no talent for music, instead she went into politics. Her parents sent her to a gymnasium, but she was expelled from there for political activity, went to Moscow and worked for several years in the newspaper "Pravda" and then in Comintern. Then she went into literature and was a member of RAPP until its dissolution. For several subsequent years she was the only literary translator from Estonian.
