• Humans represent information using symbols:

  • Digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …, 9
  • Alphabet: a, b, c, …, z and A, B, C, …, Z
  • Punctuation: , ? < > @ ( ) [ ] “” ‘’ ! $ % ^ & * / …

• Computers represent information using symbols as well:

  • Digits: 0 and 1
